Dental News

It's a fact that some root canals just don't take. But now a new study done at Columbia University compared several ways to treat a root-canals-gone-bad and found that the most cost-effective way was to surgically repair the tooth.

The study appears in the March issue of the Journal of Endodontics and found that the least cost-effective treatment for failed root canals was removing the tooth and placing an implant in the bone. Although success rate in this option was quite high, it was also the most expensive.

Surgically repairing a root canal (called a apicoectomy) is a procedure performed by either an endodontist or oral surgeon and involves cutting into the gum to access the root tip of the affected tooth. The root tip and any infected tissue are then removes and the end of the root canal is cleaned and sealed.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea treatment, symptoms and prevention

Gonorrhea, sometimes spelled "gonorrhoea," is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection. Informally, it is often referred to as "the clap." The infection is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a bacterium that thrives in warm and moist areas. Thus, it can multiply quickly once it enters the reproductive areas of the body.

The bacteria can also infect and grow in other bodily regions, including the mouth and throat. Such cases are classified as oral gonorrhea and throat gonorrhea.

Gonorrhea Transmission

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimate that 700,000 new gonorrhea cases occur in the United States on an annual basis. You can contract the bacteria that cause gonorrhea through contact with the penis, vagina or anus of an infected person. Ejaculation does not have to occur for gonorrhea transmission to take place. Oral gonorrhea and throat gonorrhea are particularly easily transmissible; you can become infected simply through kissing, though most cases are contracted through oral sex.

Effective Way to Lose Some Weight - Weight Loss Program For Ladies Over Fourty

You may begin to recognize that no matter how much you workout, you're now slowly but surely keeping excess fat. Hormone shifts and metabolic transformations rule the day when you've already reached 40 years old. A menopause for the most part features excess weight. When you begin to reduce muscle mass, your rate of metabolism also decreases. This is an inevitable side-effect of growing older.

The perfect way to losing weight for middle-aged gals is to undertake a good life-style. Provide your body just what it requires to perform optimally and steer clear of foods that are nutritionally bad and even stuffed with substances that overburden the liver. Given the eating, resting and exercise behaviors of modern gals this adjustment can be be extremely radical. It means keeping away from packed, highly refined food items which are loaded with sugars, fats, and chemicals and short of fiber and vitamins and minerals. This can include so-called diet products like diet sodas. Sugar substitutes are much worse than organic sugars and can actually be addicting.

Urge to eat big portions traced back to expansion of human brain two million years ago

The modern scourge of obesity could owe more to the lifestyle of our ancient ancestors than previously thought, according to scientists.

Anthropologists claim our urge to eat supersized portions can be traced back to the dramatic growth of the human brain and body that occurred in the face of environmental changes two million years ago.

The expansion of the human brain, which coincided with the arrival of the first hunter-gatherer economies, required early humans to bolster their diets by seeking out more energy-rich food, researchers said.

Is the morning a stressful time for you? What do you like to eat? What's your typical routine? Is it energizing? Peaceful? Stress-relieving? Here's a little treat for you...

Doesn't this breakfast look hearty and satisfying and deelish? I don't know why, but I've never thought of topping my oatmeal with diced apples. Brilliant, right? I found this yumminess--and lots more--over at a beautiful little blog called Simply Breakfast run by the talented Jennifer Causey. (Here's a breakfast I'm drooling over, even if the pastry isn't exactly health food.)

One thing I really liked finding on this blog was a post asking readers about their typical morning rituals. I found myself sifting through the hundreds of comments, absolutely fascinated with the various rituals--from simple cups of earl gray tea with a Los Angeles sunrise to a copy of The New York Times with a bagel in the park.

Go Ahead and Brag! What's the Healthiest Thing You Did This Week?

on Monday, March 4, 2013

Whew, it's finally Friday! How healthy of a week have you had? OK, so maybe you engaged in a few no-nos. Forgive and forget, and instead--let's focus on the high points of this week ... like how you went to pilates class after a hellish day at work (even though you didn't want to), or how you ordered a salad (a freaking salad!) at a restaurant where you really wanted pasta in cream sauce. Go ahead, pat yourself on the back ...

My healthy feat of the week? I'm about 8 months pregnant, so getting my beached-whale of a body moving (yes, even Jennifer Lopez called herself the same thing at the end of her pregnancy!) is a fitness accomplishment right now. Yesterday I took a power walk that got my blood pumping--and it felt pretty good!

Some pet owners cannot stand to be separated from their pets for more than a day or so and for these people, going on vacation can be a problem, because they do not want to leave their friends behind. Clearly the solution is to take your cat or dog with you. Dogs are easier to take away than cats, because they are more well-trained

If you are only going for a few days, say on business, finding a hotel near to the location of your meeting should not be too much of a problem, unless you want to stay at one of the big names in the city centre. It is often the smaller, family-run hotels or guest houses that consent to pets, although some want you to keep your dog in a kennel on the premises overnight. larger hotels tend not to be very pet-friendly.

Natural Ways to Get Better Skin & Hair

You’ve probably heard of some of the ‘tricks’ beauty pageant queens pull before a performance – such as dabbing hemorrhoid ointment under their eyes to reduce puffiness, or using plastic wrap around their thighs to induce sweating to help shed excess water weight.

While it’s debatable whether these methods even work (let alone if they’re safe), women and men alike are often apt to trying potentially dangerous ways to feel better about their appearance. Some even go as far as to try off-label prescriptions to enhance their looks, such as the recent trend in using glaucoma medicine to attain thicker eyelashes. With potential side effects including inflamed red eyes and cornea damage, these are not quite symptoms to bat an eyelash at (no pun intended).

Garlic has long been known to offer protection against heart disease and some forms of cancer, but the question has been, how much? Research on the other side of the globe has now provided the answer: half a clove of raw garlic a day will do nicely.

Husband and wife team Rex and Christine Munday, at New Zealand's Ruakura Agricultural Research Center, studied the effects of various doses of diallyl disulphide, the chemical in garlic thought to have the most potent anti-cancer properties. The substance works by encouraging the digestive system to produce enzymes that purge it of cancer-causing chemicals.

Got a Headache? Fresh Pineapple May Help Zap Your Pain

All You Need to Know About Hemorrhoids

bowel movement

Hemorrhoids are enlarged veins affecting the anus and the rectum. This condition arises as a direct result of increased pressure in the affected part of the anal or rectal region.

Hemorrhoids are enlarged veins located in the lower part of the rectum and the anus that become swollen due to increased pressure within them. This condition develops from the straining at stools and during pregnancy because of the pressure of the enlarged uterus.

Internal hemorrhoids are located in the inside lining of the rectum and cannot be felt. Typically, this type of hemorrhoids is painless and the only symptom is the evidence of bleeding with a bowel movement. External hemorrhoids, on the other hand, are located underneath the skin that surrounds the anus and are felt when swollen, and they cause itching, bleeding or pain associated with a bowel movement.

Weight and Expectation No Problem for Lee

Snooker: Stephen Lee is through to the semi-finals of the Saga Masters after thrashing Peter Ebdon

Stephen Lee's sweeping 6-1 win over Peter Ebdon gave him a place in tonight's semi-finals of the Saga Masters and provided encouragement to those who believe that significant success at snooker is compatible with possessing a fuller figure. No leading player has carried as much weight as Lee since the late Bill Werbeniuk, a world No8 of the 1980s who religiously consumed a daily 40 pints of lager.

Few of today's leading players carry much excessive poundage. Ronnie O'Sullivan, recently a creditable 28th in the Essex Cross Country Championships, is particularly sleek and barely breaks sweat in the arena while Lee, who piles on weight whatever he eats, invariably perspires profusely. This has often appeared to affect him in the latter stages of long matches, although he did manage a fine 64 clearance to snatch a 6-5 victory over Graeme Dott on the final black in the opening round, a contest which proved, that effort apart, how badly it is possible to play at this level and still win.

Benefits of Using a Baby Pacifier With a Pacifier Leash

Parents often worry about whether their babies should use pacifiers or not. Pacifiers can provide many benefits for infants, including calming a cranky baby and reducing the risk of SIDS. Attaching a pacifier clip to the pacifier can help, as well.

Research has shown and experts agree that babies crying for the breast or bottle are not always hungry. Babies often just feel an urge to suck on something, and a pacifier with a pacifier clip is perfect for these times. With the pacifier clip tied on to the pacifier, and attached to clothing or car seat straps, it is virtually impossible to lose the pacifier. That makes it very easy to soothe a fussy baby. The pacifier can also help to settle a baby back to sleep when it wakes during the night.

"Because this drug affects the immune system, the long-term effects on cancer risk or immune function is still unknown," she warned, saying she expects FDA will require Amgen to track risks over time if the drug is approved.

In 1989, during the taping of Living Dolls, a short lived television series, the actress lapsed into a coma and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.  The American Diabetes Association estimates that 500,000 to 1 million people in the US have this condition.  Type 1 diabetes is a disorder caused by autoimmune distruction of the insulin secreting cells of the pancreas resulting in the body's inability to produce sufficient insulin to meet bodily needs.

Anxiety Sufferers More at Risk From Obesity

health problems

People suffering from common mental health problems like anxiety or depression are more likely to become obese, researchers said.

The risks increase every time a person suffers an episode of feeling depressed or anxious.

The research was carried out on more than 4,000 adults (3,122 men and 1,241 women) aged 35 to 55 who were followed for more than 19 years.

They were asked questions about their health and had their weight measured at several points over the study period.

The results showed those who suffered anxiety or depression for most of the study were twice as likely to be obese as those who did not have such problems.
