Pssst! Feel like taking three minutes away from your workday to contemplate, oh, the most important subject in the world-your happiness, well-being and whether you're going where you want to in life? Then meet the woman whose new book lays it all out. I've got the inside scoop, since she happens to work 11 floors away from me.

Lucy Danziger, editor of Self magazine (owned by the same company as Glamour), is the co-author, with psychiatrist Catherine Birndorf, M.D., of The Nine Rooms of Happiness, which proposes that every one of us has nine different areas in our emotional lives-areas we need to tend to if we want to be truly satisfied in life. Intrigued, I grilled her for details.

Dental News

It's a fact that some root canals just don't take. But now a new study done at Columbia University compared several ways to treat a root-canals-gone-bad and found that the most cost-effective way was to surgically repair the tooth.

The study appears in the March issue of the Journal of Endodontics and found that the least cost-effective treatment for failed root canals was removing the tooth and placing an implant in the bone. Although success rate in this option was quite high, it was also the most expensive.

Surgically repairing a root canal (called a apicoectomy) is a procedure performed by either an endodontist or oral surgeon and involves cutting into the gum to access the root tip of the affected tooth. The root tip and any infected tissue are then removes and the end of the root canal is cleaned and sealed.

Gonorrhea treatment, symptoms and prevention

Gonorrhea, sometimes spelled "gonorrhoea," is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection. Informally, it is often referred to as "the clap." The infection is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a bacterium that thrives in warm and moist areas. Thus, it can multiply quickly once it enters the reproductive areas of the body.

The bacteria can also infect and grow in other bodily regions, including the mouth and throat. Such cases are classified as oral gonorrhea and throat gonorrhea.

Gonorrhea Transmission

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimate that 700,000 new gonorrhea cases occur in the United States on an annual basis. You can contract the bacteria that cause gonorrhea through contact with the penis, vagina or anus of an infected person. Ejaculation does not have to occur for gonorrhea transmission to take place. Oral gonorrhea and throat gonorrhea are particularly easily transmissible; you can become infected simply through kissing, though most cases are contracted through oral sex.

Effective Way to Lose Some Weight - Weight Loss Program For Ladies Over Fourty

over forty

You may begin to recognize that no matter how much you workout, you're now slowly but surely keeping excess fat. Hormone shifts and metabolic transformations rule the day when you've already reached 40 years old. A menopause for the most part features excess weight. When you begin to reduce muscle mass, your rate of metabolism also decreases. This is an inevitable side-effect of growing older.

The perfect way to losing weight for middle-aged gals is to undertake a good life-style. Provide your body just what it requires to perform optimally and steer clear of foods that are nutritionally bad and even stuffed with substances that overburden the liver. Given the eating, resting and exercise behaviors of modern gals this adjustment can be be extremely radical. It means keeping away from packed, highly refined food items which are loaded with sugars, fats, and chemicals and short of fiber and vitamins and minerals. This can include so-called diet products like diet sodas. Sugar substitutes are much worse than organic sugars and can actually be addicting.

Urge to eat big portions traced back to expansion of human brain two million years ago

The modern scourge of obesity could owe more to the lifestyle of our ancient ancestors than previously thought, according to scientists.

Anthropologists claim our urge to eat supersized portions can be traced back to the dramatic growth of the human brain and body that occurred in the face of environmental changes two million years ago.

The expansion of the human brain, which coincided with the arrival of the first hunter-gatherer economies, required early humans to bolster their diets by seeking out more energy-rich food, researchers said.

What your

Is the morning a stressful time for you? What do you like to eat? What's your typical routine? Is it energizing? Peaceful? Stress-relieving? Here's a little treat for you...

What your

Doesn't this breakfast look hearty and satisfying and deelish? I don't know why, but I've never thought of topping my oatmeal with diced apples. Brilliant, right? I found this yumminess--and lots more--over at a beautiful little blog called Simply Breakfast run by the talented Jennifer Causey. (Here's a breakfast I'm drooling over, even if the pastry isn't exactly health food.)

One thing I really liked finding on this blog was a post asking readers about their typical morning rituals. I found myself sifting through the hundreds of comments, absolutely fascinated with the various rituals--from simple cups of earl gray tea with a Los Angeles sunrise to a copy of The New York Times with a bagel in the park.

Go Ahead and Brag! What's the Healthiest Thing You Did This Week?

on Monday, March 4, 2013

Whew, it's finally Friday! How healthy of a week have you had? OK, so maybe you engaged in a few no-nos. Forgive and forget, and instead--let's focus on the high points of this week ... like how you went to pilates class after a hellish day at work (even though you didn't want to), or how you ordered a salad (a freaking salad!) at a restaurant where you really wanted pasta in cream sauce. Go ahead, pat yourself on the back ...

My healthy feat of the week? I'm about 8 months pregnant, so getting my beached-whale of a body moving (yes, even Jennifer Lopez called herself the same thing at the end of her pregnancy!) is a fitness accomplishment right now. Yesterday I took a power walk that got my blood pumping--and it felt pretty good!
